Jahn-Teller solitons, structural phase transitions, and phase separation.
It is demonstrated that under common conditions a molecular solid subject to Jahn-Teller interactions supports stable Q-ball-like nontopological solitons. Such solitons represent a localized lump of excess electric charge in periodic motion accompanied by a time-dependent shape distortion of a set of adjacent molecules. The motion of the distortion can correspond to a true rotation or to a pseu...
متن کاملPolarons and Solitons in Jahn-Teller Systems
Using a semiclassical continuum model of an electron in a deformable molecular crystal, some properties of multicomponent generalizations of the polaron–“vector polarons”– are elucidated. Analytical solutions for the case of two electronic bands coupled to two vibrational modes are given in detail. Within the model considered, the vector polaron can be classified by its wavefunction into severa...
متن کاملJahn-Teller phonon anomaly and dynamic phase fluctuations in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3.
Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the temperature (T) dependence of the lattice excitations in La 0.7Ca 0.3MnO (3). An optical Jahn-Teller phonon exhibits continuous but anomalous damping with increasing temperature in the ferromagnetic-metallic phase and collapses above the Curie temperature T(C) (240 K). We attribute this anomaly to the growing dynamic phase segregation as T-->T(...
متن کاملSimulation of the Jahn–Teller–Dicke magnetic structural phase transition with trapped ions
We study theoretically the collective E⊗e Jahn–Teller–Dicke distortion in a system of trapped ions. In a previous work (Porras et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 235701) we have focused on cooperative Jahn–Teller models consisting of an ensemble of effective spins coupled to a set of many vibrational modes. Here, we show that under suitable conditions the spin ensemble may interact only with a sin...
متن کاملStructural phase transitions
Structural phase transitions can be studied by a variety of techniques; macroscopic fields, X-ray, light and neutron diffraction, and resonance methods. The information which can be obtained by these different techniques about the order parameter and susceptibility at structural phase transitions is described and compared. Landau theory coupled with the 'sot~ mode' concept provides a simple pic...
